The Role

Reporting directly to the Purchasing Team Leader, this role focuses on developing, implementing and managing the Commercial terms, design for manufacture suitability of components within both the project and commodity environment. To help mentor and coach Technical Buyers in best sourcing practice and in line with IPT Purchasing Procedures.

To help develop and maintain commodity and supplier strategies in line with the department’s requirements.

To actively contribute to special projects as defined (e.g. Cost Reduction, DFM, Lead-time reduction, Inventory reduction and Cashflow improvements)

To support the Purchasing departments deliverables in terms of Project Purchasing and Engineering Change Responses (Technical Purchasing)

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead/Support and manage sourcing for new projects from concept through D&D and ensure a suitable high performing supply chain is in place, to deliver production requirements (low volume and/or multi-year higher volume contracts).
  • Help Lead and mentor technical buyers in procurement of key commodities.
  • To ensure the Purchasing for automotive volume programmes is in line with IPT’s formal Supplier Nomination Procedure and by ensuring supply contracts are in place at the appropriate programme milestone.
  • Develop and maintain purchasing documentation and processes to ensure all key stakeholders are clearly updated at the appropriate points.
  • Lead specific commodity and supply strategies through to delivery/implementation.
  • Delivering Purchasing KPIs focused around QCD metrics.
  • Purchasing Lead in project team meetings and information flow. This will involve working cross-functionally with other departments and internal customers (e.g., Engineering, Prototype Build, BOM, Planning & Stores etc.).
  • Lead supplier negotiations with regards to the (QCD elements) around new technologies and design improvements, to ensure value for money and that all QCD production targets can be met.
  • Identifying and assessing suitability of new suppliers, to aid delivery of the Commodity / Programme.
  • In response to ECNs, Project demands and Requisitions, source components and materials in compliance with the approved suppliers list, company procedures and at pricing and timing to meet business needs.
  • Loading Purchase orders in line with best practise and company procedures.
  • Maintain up to date delivery dates on MRP system to ensure visibility of item(s) arrival dates, this is also critical as it feeds directly into our monthly Vendor Management Reports (OTIF performance).
  • Support the expediting of purchased components where necessary, to achieve due date adherence. Resolving or escalating any issues as required.
  • Support day to day project requirements as required, where necessary provide escalation route to the expediting function.
  • Maintain best working practices at all times and compliance with Company Procedures and Health & Safety Policy.
  • Any other tasks that are reasonably assigned to you by your line manager, including development activities, which are within your capability and grade.

Required Education and Industry Experience

  • Significant experience of purchasing within a similar engineering environment.
  • Literate in MS Office applications.
  • Working knowledge of SAGE 200 Manufacturing or very similar with particular focus on BOM development and Works Orders structure.
  • Significant experience of purchasing within a similar engineering environment.
  • Confident in negotiating a price / lead time balance in order to maximise the value of the outcome for the company.

Desirable Education and Industry Experience

  • MCIPS.
  • Relevant bachelor’s or Master’s degree.
  • Supervisory / managerial responsibilities.
  • Experience of purchasing for motorsport or rapid prototyping.
